Green Tree Python Care Information

What is presented here is our opinion based on our animals here at Spruce Nubble Farm and is not meant to be "the facts" - this is what works for us and we are learning all the time.

We embrace a philosophy of open information and freely sharing what we know with everyone. We are grateful to the many people who have helped us over the years and we gladly pay it forward to anyone trying to learn.

There is much debate about the proper way to keep these animals and we believe that there is only one real key to success with Green Tree Python's – consistent good observation. If you watch your animals very carefully, take notes, and really apply yourself to what they need you'll be rewarded with healthy and happy animals.

Some folks feel that GTP's are a husbandry nightmare and that they require lots of skill to keep successfully. From worries about prolapses to animals that won't eat to parasite problems we do understand the fears. Our opinion is that GTP's are not especially difficult to care for but it is fair to say that they are not the same as most other snakes. Reptiles generally are incredibly hardy animals that will be "fine" when keepers make errors that would kill any mammal. Can a GTP have a dry water bowl for a week and be fine like a ball python would be? No way. We often say to people that a GTP is more like a dog than other snakes - they require daily care and observation.

Sometimes beginners are scared off from an "advanced" animal like a GTP but we often find that the exact opposite is true for our customers. Having never had a snake where you can literally open the cage twice a month and everything is fine we find that "newbies" usually succeed with GTP's if they have the information they need to know how to care for it.
