Carpet Pythons
Scientific
Name: Morelia
spilota
Commone Names: Carpet Python, Carpets
One of the most common pet snakes
available for a good reason - Carpets are attractive
hearty individuals that do well in the terrarium
and breed reliably. There are about a dozen
recognized types but the reality is that they
have been so heavily cross bred in captivity
that the vast majority of available animals
are at least a slight mix.
Here at Spruce Nubble Farm our
primary focus on Carpets is about the relationship
we believe they have with the Green
Tree Python. It is
our opinion that these animals are not in fact
separate species but variants, our work with
Carpondros
is focused on proving fully fertile hybrids.
Carpets vary in appearance
and they don't attain true coloration until
they are adults (sound familiar GTP keepers?)
- there are three “main” types
in terms of size. Irian Jaya's are the smallest
and usually end up around 4-5 feet, Jungles
are next and are usually 5-6 feet, Coastal's
are the “big” ones with some animals
reaching 10 feet. The vast majority of Carpets
are very docile and are happy to hang out.
Recently some really good
work has been done with a variety of carpet “morphs” -
lots of folks are interested in the Jaguar's,
Tiger's, Axanthic, and Granites that are available.
It is good to see the designer work that is
going on as well – the future will certainly
be interesting. |
