Green Tree Pythons
Scientific
Name: Morelia viridis ( formerly Chondropython
viridis )
Common Names: GTP, Chondro, Green
Tree Python
The Green Tree Python is a very beautiful,
small, arboreal, nocturnal python from the rain forests of
New Guinea and some of the surrounding islands that are part
of Indonesia. It is also found on the Cape York Peninsula of
northern Australia. The habitat of the GTP is wild, remote,
diverse, and gorgeous, with varied terrain and landscape.
The most intriguing aspect of keeping
a green tree python is undoubtedly their ontogenetic color
change. Usually born yellow or maroon, at about one year old,
green tree pythons gradually change to their adult coloration.
One of our favorite things about GTP's is that they are
just like snowflakes, every one looks a bit different.

Carpet Pythons
Scientific
Name: Morelia spilota
Common Names: Carpet Python,
Carpets
One of the most common pet snakes available
for a good reason - Carpets are attractive hearty individuals
that do well in the terrarium and breed reliably. There are
about a dozen recognized types but the reality is that they
have been so heavily cross bred in captivity that the vast
majority of available animals are at least a slight mix.
Here at Spruce Nubble Farm our primary
focus on Carpets is about the relationship we believe they
have with the Green Tree Python.
It is our opinion that these animals are not in fact separate
species but variants, our work with Carpondros is
focused on proving fully fertile hybrids.

Carpondros
Scientific
Name: Morelia spilota X Morelia viridis
Common Names: Carpondro
A Carpondro is a hybrid between a Carpet
Python and a Green
Tree Python.
It is our belief that Carpet Pythons and
Green Tree Pythons are not in fact different species but varieties
of one animal. This has been suggested by many people and in
fact Hoser even makes reference to GTP's as Morelia spilota
viridis in a 90's paper. Very little is known of the area where
the natural range crosses and no breeding has ever been observed,
no hatching eggs have ever been photographed in the wild.
The possibility of wild Carpondros is very
real.
We are proud to have three bloodlines here
at Spruce Nubble Farm and we are excited about the Carpondro
x Carpondro pairings we have planned for the coming season.
While carpondros have been shown to be fertile by breeding
them back to carpets or GTP's we are not aware of any Carpondro
x Carpondro pairings – should offspring be produced by
such work it is likely to have a substantial impact on our
understanding of the taxonomy.
