Spruce Nubble Farm is currently home to
four fantastic horses. Our horses are more than just pets,
they are also the power behind our agricultural efforts. Both
of our adult horses are trained to ride and drive, and they're
all the brawn we need for hauling heavy loads of maple sap
in the spring and plowing under the garden in the fall. Plus
they haul our less than slender behinds around the trails all
year long.
We also raise one
foal each year out of our mare Tess (that's
her above). Once we got to know Tess, we felt that there
needed to be more horses like her in the world. We're not
focused on a certain breed, or registry. But we have found
that draft crosses and many Drum
Horses possess
the qualities we want to exemplify.
The foundations of our breeding program
are:
Safety: We breed horses that are safe for you and your family
to work around and ride. We strive to achieve the correct
balance between “woah” and “go”.
We all want a mount that is fun to ride and drive. One
who will move out when asked, and stop when asked.
Size: We
are large people who breed large horses. Large doesn’t
necessarily have to mean tall. We strive to breed horses
who have the strength to carry a large rider or pull a
heavy load with ease, while maintaining their beauty and
fluidity.
Versatility: We are firm believers
that horses need to pull their own weight and pay for themselves.
We train our horses do what is needed around the farm, and
also be great trail horses.
Spruce
Nubble Tess is a 14 year old Shire x Clydesdale
mare. She stands 16hh and weighs about 1,320 lbs.
Tess is our "jack of all trades" around
the farm here. She is a reliable trail horse, willing
partner and steady hand for pulling those heavy loads.
Spruce
Nubble Godiva a.k.a. "Diva",
was born on May 30, 2008 out of our
mare "Tess" and a gorgeous Trakehner
stud.
She's going to be a big, beautiful mare with
lots of substance and style - and we are absolutely
thrilled to have her!
Spruce
Nubble Tripoli a.k.a. "Trip",
was born on June 30, 2009 and is a full sister to
Diva.
She is just as sassy as her sister, and we hope someday
the two of them will be a great team.
